Island Paradise proved to be a fitting Bowfest theme
A few showers occurred on Friday during set up for this year's Bowfest but the team on the field in Crippen Park tried to remain optimistic in the face of yet another hurdle to overcome.
It began with the unfortunate resignation of the previous hard-working board, continued with a three week long attempt to try to identify and contact the off-island wedding party that had booked the picnic shelters during Bowfest set up Friday, and included the fact that the new board was made up of entirely new members, none of whom had been involved in organizing this event before (and some who had never even met). In short: we definitely had the odds stacked against us.
But I guess the one thing we all had going for us is that each and every one of us had chosen Bowen Island as the place to call home. Those who don't live here probably can't fully understand what that means but I'm sure that most who are reading this are able to nod their heads with a knowing smile.
That sense of intentional community spirit pervaded a lot of the board's efforts to try and create the annual end of summer festival that our island had seemingly started to take for granted. It may seem saccharine to describe how this event (that typically has a year of planning and preparation involved but that came together in four short months), as "magical" but that is precisely how it felt to us on the board as dusk set in on Saturday night, and the lights from the Bowfest stage reflected off the happy faces of young and old alike.
This year's theme of "Island Paradise" couldn't have been more fitting as the day turned out to be truly idyllic. But we certainly couldn't have accomplished any of what transpired without a lot of hard work on the part of many islanders who answered our pleas for help. Without the assistance of our many very generous sponsors, both individual and corporate, to the hours of phone calls and behind the scenes errands, to the extra sets of hands over the weekend, none of this would have been possible.
To all of our sponsors (both with financial and in-kind donations), to the many parade participants, our vendors and community groups, and of course our roster of incredible musicians, our thanks for your contribution to an incredible day. And finally, a very big thank you is due to the following individuals for participating in helping make this Bowfest happen (in no particular order):
