Let the BICS Games begin!
The 2014 Winter Olympic games in Sochi, Russia, are well under way and to help celebrate the most revered sporting event in the world are the kids at the Bowen Island Community School. The grade 6 and 7 students hosted a mock Olympic games this week with an opening ceremony to kick it off. The Olympic flame was carried around the gym in a relay race and each grade adopted a country and made flags to wave as they entered the gym on Monday morning in an impressive Parade of Nations. Marie, along with Yvonne McSkimming confidently led the entire school as they sang Canada’s national anthem. After a brief multi-media presentation on the history of the games, the students demonstrated four sporting events that would be played out each day this week in a friendly competition among grades. Superintendent Chris Kennedy paid a special visit to the school and was given the honor of officially opening the games during the ceremony.
Versions of hockey, luge, curling and biathlon were modified for the gym and the students got to participate in each event battling it out against similar age groups. The students were having too much fun to worry about who placed where, while the spirit of the games were observed by all. A great job by the grade 6 and 7 students who with the help of the teachers led the entire games.
Currently Canada is in eighth place with an impressive 17 medals to be proud of. Great job Canada!
