Sky is the limit for artists in new exhibit

Trying to contain an ocean’s worth of magic on a canvas might sound ambitious, but with the recently opened Our Sea to Sky exhibit at The Gallery at Artisan Square, the sky is the limit.

Trying to contain an ocean’s worth of magic on a canvas might sound ambitious, but with the recently opened Our Sea to Sky exhibit at The Gallery at Artisan Square, the sky is the limit.

In between the calming sea and the soaring mountains are a number of creative communities inspired by the beauty of the region.

The artists’ reception on Saturday, July 23, from 3 to 5 p.m. is open to the public and features a performance by Vancouver-based singer/songwriter Donna Newsom, alongside the exhibit’s diverse art forms.

The Bowen Island Arts Council is excited to be presenting one of the first collaborations of the Sea to Sky Arts Councils Alliance. Featuring the art of 43 visual artists from the Sea to Sky corridor – Bowen Island, Lions Bay, Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton – the exhibit showcases a variety of artwork representing the region.

These include paintings, stoneware, photographs, jewelry and a myriad of other treasures. The show, explains curator, Emilie Kaplun, is one way of showcasing the rich talent of artists who live in the region.

“We wanted to highlight the immensely creative part of the world we live in, so we invited artists from communities nearby,” said Kaplun.

BIAC is co-hosting the exhibit with the Alliance, and all participants are members of one of the five arts councils in the area. The Alliance, formed a couple of years ago, says it is intent on working together to help support and promote arts and culture throughout the region.

Our Sea to Sky exhibit, or portions of it, will be touring and be presented in Whistler, Squamish and possibly Pemberton once the show closes on Bowen.
