CLEVELAND (AP) — Parker Messick pitched seven shutout innings in his second big league start, and the Cleveland Guardians snapped a six-game losing streak and a 28-inning scoreless drought with a 3-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.
Messick (1-0) allowed four hits, struck out six and didn’t issue a walk. He pitched 6 2/3 innings and left with a 2-1 lead in his debut against Arizona before the Diamondbacks rallied for a 3-2 win in 10 innings.
Hunter Gaddis pitched a scoreless eighth and Cade Smith closed it out for his eighth save.
RED SOX 5, ORIOLES 0
BALTIMORE (AP) — Lucas Giolito allowed four hits in eight innings, Trevor Story and David Hamilton both homered, and Boston blanked Baltimore.
Kyle Bradish (0-1) struck out 10 in six innings in his return from Tommy John surgery, but the Orioles gave him no run support. Story and Hamilton went deep leading off the second and third innings, and that was enough for Boston. The Red Sox added another run in the eighth, then two more in the ninth when rookie left fielder Dylan Beavers overran Hamilton’s shallow fly with two outs, resulting in a two-run double.
Boston entered the night as the American League’s top wild card, five games behind AL East-leading Toronto. The Red Sox have won five of six since the Orioles swept two games in Boston last week.
Giolito (9-2) looked like he might be on his way to a shutout after needing only four pitches to get through the seventh, but he threw 21 in the eighth, which included his only walk of the night. Giolito battled his way to an 11-pitch strikeout of Jeremiah Jackson to end that inning.
BRAVES 11, MARLINS 2
MIAMI (AP) — Ozzie Albies homered twice, doubled and drove in four runs and Atlanta used a nine-run ninth inning to beat Miami.
Drake Baldwin and Eli White each drove in two runs for the Braves.
Tyler Kinley (3-3) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win. Atlanta starter Hurston Waldrep gave up a run on eight hits with a walk in 5 1/3 innings.
Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara gave up two runs in seven innings. Tyler Zuber (0-1) allowed two runs and recorded an out in the ninth.
YANKEES 5, NATIONALS 1
NEW YORK (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton hit a 451-foot, two-run homer in the sixth inning and drove in five runs for the first time since 2022 to lead New York to a victory over Washington.
The Yankees won their third straight and remained a half-game behind Boston for the AL’s top wild-card spot.
Stanton gave the Yankees a 5-1 lead when he lifted a slider from Orlando Ribalta about halfway up the left field bleachers for his fifth homer in seven games.
Stanton’s 446th career homer was the highlight of his first game with at least five RBIs since May 12, 2022 against the White Sox. It was his eighth game with at least five RBIs and one shy of his career high.
Stanton also hit a bases-clearing double off the top of the left field fence with two outs in the third to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead off Washington starter MacKenzie Gore (5-13).
New York starter Luis Gil (2-1) allowed five hits and one run in five innings. He walked four for the third time since returning from a lat strain, and struck out five.
TWINS 7, BLUE JAYS 5
TORONTO (AP) — Mickey Gasper hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning, Matt Wallner added a go-ahead homer and Minnesota rallied to beat Toronto.
Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman came on in the ninth with Toronto leading 4-3, but Gasper greeted him with a game-tying homer, the first of his career.
Four batters later, Wallner gave the Twins the lead with a two-run homer, his 20th. Wallner homered twice in Monday’s 10-4 loss.
The Twins snapped a three-game losing streak and won for the third time in 12 games.
The blown save was Hoffman’s seventh in 35 chances. Hoffman has allowed 12 home runs.
PIRATES 8, CARDINALS 3
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Henry Davis homered, Bryan Reynolds hit a pair of doubles and Pittsburgh beat St. Louis.
Mitch Keller (6-12) allowed three runs on three hits and struck out nine in six innings for the Pirates, who have won five of six.
Andre Pallante (6-12) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and a walk in five innings. He is 0-4 with a 11.65 ERA over 17 innings in his last four starts.
Nolan Gorman hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, his 13th of the season.
Davis hit his sixth home run of the season in the third inning to give Pittsburgh an 8-0 lead.
METS 6, PHILLIES 5
NEW YORK (AP) — Brandon Nimmo singled home the winning run in the ninth inning, Pete Alonso had four hits and New York beat Philadelphia.
Alonso delivered a two-run double in a five-run fifth that gave New York a 5-2 lead. Harrison Bader tied it for Philadelphia with a two-run homer in the eighth off struggling reliever Ryan Helsley, booed off the mound by the Citi Field crowd of 41,914.
Juan Soto and Mark Vientos each provided an RBI single for the Mets, who won for the fourth time in five games following a 5-16 stretch. They pulled within five games of first-place Philadelphia in the NL East by winning their ninth straight against the rival Phillies at home — including last year’s playoffs.
Bader and Bryce Harper each had three hits for the Phillies, who have lost 23 of 29 in Queens, counting the 2024 postseason.
RANGERS 7, ANGELS 3
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Patrick Corbin gave up three hits over eight shutout innings, Corey Seager became the first Ranger to reach 20 home runs this season, and Texas beat Los Angeles.
Corbin (7-9) allowed a walk with eight strikeouts. He is 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA in four starts against the Angels this season. He won for the first time since July 10 when he beat the Angels 11-4.
Wyatt Langford drew a walk from Yusei Kikuchi (6-9) leading off the first and Seager walked with one out. Adolis García doubled in a run, Josh Jung had an RBI single, and Cody Freeman added a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
Jonah Heim walked leading off the second and rookie Michael Helman hit his second homer for a 5-0 advantage.
Kyle Higashioka hit a 421-foot shot to left-center field for a 6-0 lead in the fourth and Seager hit a solo shot off Sam Bachman in the seventh.
Danny Coulombe surrendered Zach Neto’s 23rd homer in the ninth and Jo Adell’s career-high 30th — a two-run shot. Phil Maton got the final two outs.
Kikuchi allowed six runs on four hits and three walks in four innings.
ROYALS 5, WHITE SOX 4
CHICAGO (AP) — Michael Massey hit a tying two-run single in the ninth inning and Kyle Isbel had a go-ahead run-scoring single as Kansas City rallied for a win over Chicago.
Maikel Garcia had a two-run single in the eighth inning as the Royals rallied from a 4-0 deficit. Jonathan India had two hits and scored two runs.
Sam Long (2-3) pitched a scoreless eighth to pick up the win, and Carlos Estévez got the last three outs for his 35th save as the Royals advanced (68-65) remained in the wild-card race.
ROCKIES 6, ASTROS 1
HOUSTON (AP) — Hunter Goodman hit a two-run homer and Mickey Moniak drove in three runs as Colorado snapped a four-game skid with a win over Houston.
Tanner Gordon (5-5) allowed six hits and run in six innings to earn his third straight win.
The Rockies took the lead in the third on a costly error. The Astros were up by 1 when Kyle Karros singled with one out in the inning. Ryan Ritter then reached and Karros moved to third on an error by Jeremy Peña that kept Houston from turning a double play.
The Rockies took advantage of the miscue when Ritter scored on a groundout by Tyler Freeman to tie it 1-all. Moniak followed with an RBI single to put the Rockies on top.
Goodman then hit his 26th home run to left-center to make it 4-1.
BREWERS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 8
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Isaac Collins hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to bring home the winning run, and Milwaukee recovered after blowing a six-run lead to beat Arizona.
For the second straight night, the major league-best Brewers grabbed an early 6-0 lead. Milwaukee hung on for a 7-5 victory Monday. This time, the Diamondbacks came all the way back to tie it.
William Contreras and Brice Turang hit two-run homers for Milwaukee. Gabriel Moreno had a three-run shot for Arizona.
Contreras singled to lead off the ninth before Juan Morillo (0-3) walked Christian Yelich and Andrew Vaughn to load the bases.
GIANTS 5, CUBS 2
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Justin Verlander finally won at home for the first time since joining the Giants, backed by Matt Chapman’s sixth-inning home run and an earlier drive by Wilmer Flores, and San Francisco beat Chicago.
Verlander (2-10) allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked two over six innings. He had been 0-6 at home this season, and the Giants had gone 3-9 in his previous 12 outings at Oracle Park since he signed a $15 million, one-year contract in January.
Chapman connected for his 17th homer as San Francisco won its third straight following a four-game skid.
Rafael Devers blooped a go-ahead single into shallow left field with two out in the fifth after Heliot Ramos doubled to tie it. Carson Kelly had given Chicago the lead on a single in the top of the inning.
Flores homered in the second to stake Verlander to an early lead. Matt Shaw’s RBI single in the fourth tied it.
Ryan Walker finished for his 12th save.
PADRES 7, MARINERS 6
SEATTLE (AP) — Ramon Laureano hit a grand slam in the first inning and San Diego Padres beat Seattle.
Laureano, acquired from the Baltimore Orioles ahead of last month’s trade deadline, turned on an elevated fastball from Mariners starter Luis Castillo in the first inning to give San Diego an early 5-0 lead.
The Padres coasted for the next few innings, but briefly ceded their lead in the fifth when the Mariners struck for six runs on a pair of three-run homers by Randy Arozarena and Eugenio Suárez.
San Diego responded in the top of the sixth. Jake Cronenworth poked a run-scoring single to the opposite field, and Freddy Fermin put the Padres up for good with a sacrifice bunt off Mariners reliever Caleb Ferguson (3-4).
Adrián Morejón (10-4) and three other Padres relievers combined to keep the Mariners in check the rest of the way, with Robert Suarez finishing off the game with his league-leading 35th save of the season.
DODGERS 6, REDS 3
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Clayton Kershaw pitched five innings of one-run ball and Los Angeles defeated Cincinnati for their third straight win.
Kershaw (9-2) allowed two hits and struck out six in his 221st career victory, tying him with former Dodger Max Scherzer and Joe Niekro for 76th on the all-time list.
Tanner Scott pitched the ninth to earn his 20th save.
The Dodgers batted around in the sixth when they scored four runs, extending their lead to 6-1. Will Smith homered leading off against reliever Brent Suter. Miguel Rojas added a pinch-hit two-run double and Shohei Ohtani had an RBI single.
ATHLETICS 7, TIGERS 6, 10 INNINGS
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Darell Hernaiz walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the Athletics Detroit.
Jacob Wilson homered and had a career-high four RBIs, Tyler Soderstrom had two hits and two RBIs, and Shea Langeliers doubled among his three hits and scored two runs.
Eduarniel Núñez (1-0) made his eighth MLB appearance and got his first career win. The 26-year-old reliever replaced Elvis Alvarado with runners at first and third and two out in the top of the 10th after Zach Mckinstry’s single gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead. Núñez got Javier Báez — the only batter he faced — to strike out swinging.
