A car ran into a Nanaimo house Sunday night, missing a nine-year-old girl sleeping inside by less than two metres.
Nanaimo RCMP said the car hit the central Nanaimo home about 10:30 p.m. with enough force that it was embedded in the foundation.
There were two adults and four children sleeping in the home at Highland Boulevard and Cosgrove Crescent. They were uninjured and were taken to a hotel for emergency lodging.
When police arrived, they found a woman and her dog inside the car. She was helped from the vehicle and transported to hospital by paramedics for treatment of minor injuries. The dog was not hurt.
Police have launched an impaired-driving investigation.
Officers determined the woman was driving south on Highway 19A when she lost control for unknown reasons. The car crossed into the northbound lanes, went through a grassy ditch, hit a parked vehicle and continued toward the house.
Police left the car where it was overnight, pending an engineering assessment of the home Monday. Significant damage was found.
“Given the extent of the structural damage to the home, it is simply astounding that no one was injured in this accident,” said Const. Gary O’Brien.
Police are asking anyone with dashcam video of the incident, including pre-crash footage, to call 250-754-2345.
