There have been more than 100 new cases per day of COVID-19 confirmed since Friday, and four deaths.

In an update Monday, provincial health officer Bonnie Henry said there were 358 new cases confirmed since Friday, four deaths and three new outbreaks, with single cases, in health care facilities.

The deaths and hospitalizations remain overwhelmingly amoung the elderly. Henry said a very small number of people who have been hospitalized are in the 20 to 39 age range, which accounts for most of the new cases.

Three new outbreaks at health care facilities include: Langley Lodge, White Seniors Village and Chartwell Crescent Gardens. All have been single cases involving staff.

That brings the total of long-term care or acute care facilities with at least one case of COVID-19 among staff, residents or patients to 19.

In an epidemiology update, Henry said the rate of hospitalizations has increased since the summer to 8%, but remains far below the 20% rate during the first wave of the COVID-19 virus.

The new cases remain predominantely in the 20-to-39 age demographic. The median age range of those who have died from COVID-19 is 85, she said.

Concerns have been raised about the spread of the virus from the reopening of schools. There have been cases of teachers and students testing positive for the virus, but Henry said children and youth under the age of 19 make up less than 10% of total cases.

"What we're not seeing is schools amplifying transmission in the community," Henry said.

"The proportion of COVID-19, by week, in school-aged children remain low, and less than 10%. And that has been consistent in the three to four weeks since schools have opened."
