One man is dead after an armed standoff overnight Saturday with Dawson Creek RCMP.

At about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, RCMP in Dawson Creek arrived at a residence on 10th Street to arrest a man who was the subject of an arrest warrant in relation to a local ongoing investigation, a BC RCMP release stated.

The man was in possession of a weapon and refused to exit the residence but three women who were also inside were able to exit safely.

The area around the location was cordoned off and the North District Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiator and Police Dog Services were called in.

Several attempts were made to communicate and negotiate with the man to safely surrender, RCMP said. On two separate occasions, there was an exchange of gunfire with officers.

At about 8:25 a.m. Sunday, police entered the residence, and found the man deceased with what is believed to be self-inflicted injuries.

No one else was injured.

The Independent Investigations Office, B.C.’s police oversight body, is investigating police actions while the RCMP is conducting a parallel investigation into the events that preceded the interaction with police.
