A preliminary hearing is underway in Vancouver Provincial Court for a man facing drug trafficking and weapons charges.

Richard Carl Arthur Cahoon has pleaded not guilty to the charges connected to events in Vancouver and Burnaby.

For alleged events Aug. 6, 2020, Cahoon, 38, is charged with trafficking in cocaine, methamphetamine and hydromorphone.

In connection with alleged events May 19, 2021, he is charged with trafficking in methamphetamine.

In connection with allegations stemming from June 29, 2021, Cahoon is charged with possession a restricted Benelli Super Vinci pump-action shotgun without a licence or registration. He is also charged with careless storing of such a firearm.

He is also charged with possessing such a weapon while prohibited from doing so.

Also for that day, Cahoon is alleged to have possessed a non-restricted Lee Enfield N. 4 MK1 .303-calibre rifle with a six-round magazine without a licence or registration. He is also charged with careless storing of such a firearm.

He is further charged for that day with possession of brass knuckles with a spring-loaded blade, and possession of plastic brass knuckles with an integrated stun Taser without a licence.

Preliminary hearings are held to determine if enough evidence exists for an accused to be committed to stand trial on the charges.

Such hearings are covered by a publication ban so as not to taint a potential jury pool should an accused elect a judge and jury trial.
