Cariboo-Prince George MP Todd Doherty is asking for residents to reach out to MPs through emails and social media to support his private members bill before the House of Commons.

Bill C-321 would revise the Criminal Code to consider an assault against first responders or healthcare personnel as an aggravating circumstance during the sentencing of the perpetrator of the assault.

“Our frontline heroes, our nurses, firefighters, paramedics, police, and other healthcare workers are confronting an epidemic of violence while serving and providing essential services to our communities,” Doherty said in a release.

The bill will be up for debate on Tuesday in the House of Commons.

Doherty is hoping supporters contact MPs or use the hashtag #321GO in social media posts supporting the legislation.

“Everyone has the right to a safe and respectful work environment,” Doherty said. “We need to work together, to ensure all healthcare providers and other frontline staff are safe at work."
