WorkBC is hosting three drop-in workshops at the Bowen Island Public Library.

WorkBC is a treasure trove of information about job trends, career opportunities and training.

You can meet one-on-one with a career advisor on Wednesdays September 19, October 10, and November 14 from 2 to 5pm.

• Thomas King's The Inconvenient Indian is the next title to be explored at Knowing Our Place: The Book Club.

Knowing Our Place is an initiative of the Bowen Island Public Library, the Bowen Island Arts Council, and Pauline Le Bel. "The aim is to learn our true history with Indigenous peoples and to foster mutually enhancing relationships."

New members are welcome to join in for the two discussions: Saturdays September 29 and October 27 from 11am to 12:30pm. Books are available beforehand at the library.

• You know you can spell. But can you spell in a costume? The 3rd Annual Adult Spelling Bee is Saturday, October 13, 7:30pm. Teams of two to four are invted to get creative with costumes ato raise money to purchase furniture for the Annie Laurie Wood Annex and Flex Room.

The registration deadline is September 30. It's free this year.

 

• In October, the library is partnering with NIDUS on four end-of-life-planning webinars.

You're invited to gather in the Annex to watch on the big screen as NIDUS demystifies:

  • Oct. 2 — Joint Ownership: the Good, the Bad, & the Risky
  • Joint ownership of bank accounts, real estate property, and vehicles is common for spouses. What can happen when a parent and child own property jointly? Learn about recent court cases that raise new cautions about joint ownership. Joint ownership is NOT a substitute for planning in case of incapacity or end-of-life.
  • Oct. 16 — Dying Without a Will and Tips on Making a Will
  • Some people are considered not capable of making a will due to the legal requirements. This may be someone with a disability from birth or someone who delayed making a Will and now has advanced dementia. How is their estate settled? For the majority who can make a will, get some tips and resources.
  • Oct. 23 — Consent to Health Care & Facility Care
  • Consent underlies many of our day-to-day interactions. Consent is also fundamental to encounters with the health care and residential care systems. What are the consent rights of patients? What are the rights of representatives if authorized to give consent for health and personal care by a Representation Agreement?
  • Oct. 30 — The Planning Continuum: a Will is NOT Enough!
  • Learn about the essential legal documents in BC for those who want to plan for incapacity, for end-of-life, and for after death. We will discuss Representation Agreements, Enduring Powers of Attorney, and Wills.
