North Vancouver and West Vancouver weekly COVID case count crosses 100

New cases continue to grow

There were 137 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the North Shore in the last week of data released by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

Between Aug. 22 and 28, 107 North Vancouver residents tested positive for the virus, while 27 West Vancouver residents became infected.

It’s the first time the North Shore has crossed the 100 threshold since the fourth wave began. In the previous two weeks, North Vancouver’s tally rose by 72 and 54, while West Vancouver’s grew by 24 and 10.

Vaccination numbers had been growing by about one per cent per week over the summer, but the number of eligible people who have received at least one dose of a vaccine in North Vancouver stayed static at 90 per cent in the last seven-day period of data. West Vancouver/Bowen Island, meanwhile, moved from 85 to 86 per cent between Aug. 24 and Aug. 31.

As of Thursday, the province estimates 84.6 per cent of all eligible British Columbians have received at least one dose and 76.9 per cent have received both.

Still, provincially, infection numbers continue to climb, with 801 new cases detected between Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, while six more residents had died. In the week ending Aug. 31, the province says 68.8 of new cases were in unvaccinated individuals.
