Five-fold weekly increase of COVID-19 cases in Richmond

COVID-19 cases in Richmond jumped significantly this week (Nov. 13-19) with 244 new cases reported by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), compared to just 48 new cases reported last week.

COVID-19 cases in Richmond jumped significantly this week (Nov. 13-19) with 244 new cases reported by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), compared to just 48 new cases reported last week.

This brings the total number of cases in Richmond since the beginning of the pandemic to 726 – up from 482 last week.

This data was released on Thursday while cases continue to rise across the province. New restrictions on gatherings and travel until Dec. 7 were announced by the provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, on Thursday afternoon.

On Thursday, Henry said there were 538 new cases of COVID-19 across the province, including 178 in Vancouver Coastal Health, the health region Richmond is located in.

This follows Wednesday’s record number of 762 cases reported across the province in one day.

Henry also mandated mask-wearing in all retail settings, except while eating or drinking.

Richmond City Coun. Chak Au was calling on the province to mandate masks in all public indoor places, something he plans to bring up at council on Monday.

The new COVID-19 testing site opened on Saturday just outside the airport at the JetSet parking lot, 5911 North Service Rd. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily for drive-through. Anyone who needs to walk in to be tested can go to Richmond Hospital.
