A motorcycle driver who tried to evade police and allegedly caused a serious collision has been left with life-threatening injuries.

The incident occurred Aug. 25, when an officer in Trail, B.C., was conducting speed enforcement in an unmarked police vehicle. At about 11:30 a.m., the officer spotted an aggressive driver on a motorcycle on on Highway 3B, according to Cpl. Mike Moore with the B.C. Highway Patrol Road Safety Unit.

The motorcycle driver passed the officer travelling at over 40 kilometres per hour above the speed limit. When the officer tried to conduct a traffic stop, the driver crossed the double solid line into oncoming traffic.

Police say the driver accelerated rapidly to speeds in excess of double the posted speed limit.

"The officer quickly determined that the risk to the public presented by the fleeing motorcycle and the continued risk that would be created by a pursuit outweighed the need to stop the offender,” said Moore.

The motorcyclist carried on for five kilometres before colliding with a turning vehicle when he failed to stop at a traffic light at Marcolin Drive.

"The motorcycle rider sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital,” says Moore.

The occupant of the second vehicle was not injured.

"These events remind us all why it is important to follow the rules of the road and always remain vigilant when driving,” Moore said.
