BC SPCA hopes to free up space in order to continue supporting emergency animal evacuations, according to a press release.

The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) is hoping to spur pet adoption in the province with a new limited-time promotion.

The local non-profit announced that all pet adoptions will be 50 per cent off for the Vancouver and Vancouver Island Community Animal Centres between Aug. 24 and Sept. 1, according to a press release.

As BC SPCA continues to provide emergency support for pets across the province and is hoping to encourage more adoption.

“This promotion is a great way for us to find these incredible animals their new homes faster while also freeing up capacity for emergency boarding of animals impacted by the fires," said Breanne Beckett, senior manager of animal care services in the Victoria Area.

This year has been labelled the worst fire season in B.C.'s recorded history, with the previous four worst seasons occurring in the last six years. As this year's fires continue, the BC SPCA is providing emergency animal evacuation support. A crucial step in this process is ensuring they have enough capacity to help animals impacted.

“Understandably, there is less adoption interest right now from the areas most impacted by the wildfires. Through the BC SPCA’s Drive for Lives program, we have been able to move most of our adoptable pets out of the fire affected areas so they can get a fresh start,” Beckett said.

While the promotion is meant to encourage more adoption, Beckett highlighted that taking on a pet is a large responsibility.

“Although we are reducing the cost to adopt an animal during this promotion, the adoption process and requirements do not change. Potential adopters still need to fill out an application and meet the animal to make sure it is a good fit for everyone. We want the future guardians to be fully aware of the commitment involved when you bring home a new family member.”

The promotion applies to dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals, according to the press release.
