A teen driver from Abbotsford has had his licence suspended for a year, and his stepmom’s BMW was impounded.
The 16-year-old was handed several tickets totalling almost $1,800 after a grey BMW was clocked going 80 km/h over the speed limit on Highway 1 in the Bridal Falls area on July 21. It then crashed into a parked dump truck.
The trouble started when a BC Highway Patrol officer using laser radar recorded the grey sedan going 180 km/h in a 100 km zone. The officer didn’t pursue but moments later, a driver called police to report that a car had gone through a stop sign and collided with his parked dump truck along the Highway 9 offramp.
When officers arrived at the scene, they saw what appeared to be the same grey BMW with its front end jammed into the driver’s side tire of the dump truck. The driver of the BMW was a 16-year-old with a Class 7 learner’s licence. He had two of his friends in the passenger seats.
“The passengers were not impressed. Hopefully, the driver will learn that peer pressure works both ways,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin. “He will also have to explain why his stepmother’s car is sitting in an impound lot with thousands of dollars in damage.”
The teen is now facing nearly $1,800 in fines, a seven-day vehicle impound and 12-month driving ban.
"We tell you these stories because we want you to stay safe and avoid the financial pain of enforcement and the emotional and physical pain of collisions,” said McLaughlin.
“Make a conscious decision to slow down and obey the law every time you start your car.”
