Clue: This Victoria-area attraction was featured on an episode of Jeopardy! on Tuesday night.

Answer: What is Butchart Gardens?

Actually, the clue on the show, which came under the gardens category and was worth $2,000, was: “A National Historic Site of Canada, these gardens on Vancouver Island include the beautiful Sunken Garden seen here,” and showed a photo of the attraction.

While some in Greater Victoria were likely screaming at their television screens, the three contestants were stumped.

One guessed that the answer was: “What is Busch Gardens?”

Staff at Butchart Gardens say they didn’t know ahead of time that the attraction would be featured on the show.

Jill Smillie, director of public relations, sales and marketing for the gardens, said it would have been nice, of course, had the contestants answered correctly, “but still, just to be a part of it is lovely.”

“And, you know, Ken Jennings saying ‘Butchart Gardens’ on national television is wonderful.”

Butchart Gardens provided a photo of the Sunken Garden to the show in 2012, when a Jeopardy! researcher contacted the team. The attraction was featured in an episode that year.

The gardens were also referenced in a clue in 2021, posed to contestants as: “The Butchart Gardens is one of the prettiest spots near this provincial capital on Vancouver Island.”

It was answered correctly.
