Environment Canada's alert for Metro Vancouver is still in place, warning of heavy rain and a risk of thunderstorms.

The system the agency warned about Wednesday is crossing over Vancouver and the Lower Mainland today, they state online, and with it up to 40 mm of rain will fall in some areas.

Following the heavy rain, which we've already seen some of this morning, showers are likely and the risk of isolated thunderstorms rises.

The special weather statement issued by Environment Canada covers the following areas:

  • Metro Vancouver - central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
  • Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge

The risk of thunderstorms runs from noon until 9 p.m. The chance of rain or showers will lessen throughout the day, dropping to essentially zero by midnight.

The alert also covers the Howe Sound and Sunshine Coast regions.

While rare in Vancouver, the city experienced an epic thunderstorm earlier this month and people got some amazing photos.
