Teacher gets lifetime ban for student sexual exploitation.

A B.C. teacher has been banned from teaching for life after being convicted of sexual exploitation of a student, the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation said June 7.

The commissioner’s office said the conduct constituted a criminal offence; violated the teacher’s privileged position of power and trust in exploiting the student; damaged the student’s physical and emotional safety and well-being; and was dishonest due to lies to the Teacher Regulation Branch.

It was in April 2016 that the branch learned the unnamed teacher was having a sexual relationship with a student.

Two months later, the teacher gave the commissioner an undertaking not to practice teaching and resigned.

The teacher received teaching certification in 1999 and was employed at a high school.

It wasn’t until November 2019 that the teacher pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation. The commissioner’s decision said those proceedings were covered by publication bans.

The teacher entered into a consent agreement with the commissioner admitting the professional misconduct.

Under the agreement’s terms, the teacher agreed he will never again apply for teaching certification or authorization.
