This Canada Line station will close early for almost 2 months. Here's why

TransLink advises riders to use a bus bridge to get to the next station.

A Canada Line SkyTrain station in Vancouver will close early over the next couple of months for important upgrades.

The Oakridge-41st Avenue Station will close at 11 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday over seven weeks for "important upgrade work," according to a TransLink news release.

The temporary closure includes two phases, which TransLink says are necessary for commuter safety. Crews will install steel structural columns by the station entrance and large wooden beams to support the new canopy and roof.

Closures will take place at 11 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday nights only — excluding Friday and Saturday — during the following periods:

  • Sunday, June 8 to Thursday, June 12
  • Wednesday, July 2 to Wednesday, Aug. 6 (excluding Sunday, Aug. 3)

What should commuters keep in mind during the upgrades?

TransLink advises commuters to provide an additional 20 minutes travel time and to use the Route 15 and the N15 NightBus at Oakridge–41st Avenue Station to travel between King Edward and Langara–49th Avenue stations.

Once the upgrades are complete, the travel authority says the station will be "more accessible and better equipped to serve the growing neighbourhood."

Over 7,000 people use Oakridge–41st Avenue Station, and ridership is expected to grow as the local population increases.

The full station upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of the year and will include:

  • Two new escalators to improve accessibility at the station
  • A new street-level station entrance canopy for better weather protection
  • Direct underground mall access
  • New public art inside the station
