‘Alternative’ learning scholarship

Last spring, the board of the Knick Knack Nook decided to dedicate a chunk of money to a new bursary for Bowen Islanders following “alternative paths” environmental learning.

They put the call out for applicants, but almost nine months later, none have come in.

“We just thought that there were people out there – at any age – that wanted to go out and learn things,” says the Nook’s Donna Scorer. “Everything had been geared toward university but we wanted to include more people and types of learning. Maybe the money would go to someone who keeps bees but wanted to take a course and bring that knowledge back to the island by putting on a workshop or something. We really had nothing specific in mind.”

Scorer adds that the pot for this bursary increased from $2,000 to $5,000 when one of the winners of a university bursary decided to put off school for a year. The deadline for applications for this bursary is stated as Aug. 31 on the Knick, Knack, Nook website, but Scorer says that the deadline should be considered as open.

“We would really like someone to apply,” she says. “Ideally by the end of the fiscal year."
