The Bowen Island Community School (BICS)- Learning Commons project is the proud recipient of the first annual, Bowen Island Branch, First Credit Union Community Impact Fund gift of $750.00.
As a community-based financial institution, the purpose of First Credit Union is "to strengthen the well-being of our member-clients and make meaningful community impact." The Community Impact Funds support this purpose by giving one-time financial support to non-profit organizations that contribute to the long-term social, health, economic or environmental well-being of the community. The size of the fund First Credit Union is able to gift is based directly on the Bowen Island branch assets and is expected to grow each year.
The BICS new Learning Commons will transform the library into a bigger, brighter, flexible space where students and community are welcomed to research and exchange ideas. Moveable furniture and equipment will allow for collaborative learning, presentations and quiet spaces for individual reading. A large and varied book collection, along with new technology, will connect our school and community beyond the walls of the school and island to the world.
The First Credit Union’s gift will provide a wonderful boost to our early fundraising efforts. With these funds we look forward to starting phase 2 of the renovation project this summer with the purchase of movable furniture to enhance collaborative learning and the creation of a variety of learning spaces within the library.
