The Bowen Island Black Sheep Morris dancers invite everyone to join in the Bowfest merriment on August 27 at the Crippen Park festival field in Snug Cove.

The Bowen Island Black Sheep Morris dancers are a not-for-profit group. They perform traditional and new Border Morris folk dances, participate in events on and off-island, host visiting dance troupes and assist in organizing the youngest Morris dancers: the lambs. The troupe primarily performs for free and fundraises to help defray some of the rental, kit and travel and special-event costs.

This year's Bowfest will be the third year the sheep will be involved in running the gate. To staff the gate at Bowfest allows the group to support the Bowfest festival committee, as well as to raise a bit of money to help the sheep continue to provide no-cost entertainment for the community. For more information, talk to a sheep or go to www.bowenblacksheep.ca.

Because the sheep will be performing, parading and running the gate, we are putting the call out to the community to volunteer for a shift at the gates. Aside from the fun of greeting people, gate volunteers will receive a limited edition sheep tank top. If you are interested to volunteer, please contact [email protected] or call Sarah at 604-947-0179.

Some tips for experiencing Bowfest:

Buy your tickets in advance at Phoenix. You will save $1 and get through the gate in the express lane.

Plan to bring some cash. Most vendors on site won't be able to accept anything else and sometimes the bank machines run out on the Bowfest weekend!

Volunteer at Bowfest. The Bowfest committee, the people organizing the parade, setting up the stages and performing at Bowfest are all volunteers. Being part of the popular community fair is a great experience. Please contact [email protected].

Participate. You can enter a contest in advance or on Bowfest day. For more details, see www.bowfest2011.com.

Bring a blanket, sunscreen, an umbrella and consider carpooling or walking to the festival if possible.

Pick up a copy of the Undercurrent and check out the Bowfest special insert to see what's happening before you get to the site so you won't miss any of the fun!
