The Knick Knack Nook is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2016 Alternative Environmental Sustainability Bursary is Jessica Mitts. Jessica is following her passion to become a land care professional and is in her last year of studies at Gaia College.

Over the years Jessica has volunteered her time and skills at community events like AppleFest, Bowfest, Bowen Feast, and the Bowen Farmer’s market and she plans to continue to give to Bowen once completing her education. In the bursary application Jessica wrote: “My vision is that one day the majority of fresh produce you purchase up the Ruddy Potato will be grown on the island with my help. The surplus of our harvest will go to the food bank to supply the less fortunate with good food. This food will be nutrient rich from a land that is properly taken care of by using holistic land management skills. As much as possible, the materials used in these community gardens will be recycled in order to reduce our environmental footprint. The beautiful community gardens you enjoy on island will be built with the heart and soul of the community, with me helping to bring people together to do it. When a delicate ecosystem on island is suffering, I will be able to assist in remediation without using any harmful chemicals. Everyone on the island will feel the balance created from the love and care put into this land.”

The Knick Knack Nook’s mission is to provide a welcoming community service that fosters environmental and social responsibility primarily through sale of used items in good condition.

We believe that Jessica embodies the notion of environmental and social responsibility and we look forward to watching her practice ecologically responsible land care practices on Bowen.
