Please note the following changes to recycling at the Bowen Island Recycling Depot (BIRD).

BIRD now accepts all kinds of glass (except mirrors) and all colours go in all three windows no more separating colours.

All kinds of light bulbs will also be accepted. Please remember that all kinds of fluorescents both the curly CFLs and the tubes contain mercury, and must be recycled, not put into garbage.

Several months ago, BIRD started taking thermostats. The old ones contain a very large amount of mercury, and BIRD will take them for safe recycling.

BIRD also takes smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors which contain some radioactive material.

Please take the time to stack similar sized containers together and to flatten plastics and tin cans. Roger McGillivray has built a table for stacking yogurt pots and greens containers etc. with others of a similar size. This will save on the number of trips the trucks make to the city, which saves on both carbon emissions and transport costs to the Bowen Island Municipality.
