Gallery features local landscapes

With the hiatus from school and, for some, an abundance of free time, the travelling bug has bit many islanders. Off they go, to Europe or Hawaii seeking escape from cloudy and rainy BC.

With the hiatus from school and, for some, an abundance of free time, the travelling bug has bit many islanders. Off they go, to Europe or Hawaii seeking escape from cloudy and rainy BC.

But I find that once I'm away, after the initial excitement has worn off, the sun is always a little too hot and the landscape, though interesting, is somehow lacking. It's not long before I begin to ache for the familiarity of the gorgeous BC rainforests and the rocky Bowen beaches.

For those who share my love of our natural vistas, the Gallery @ Artisan Square has a treat for you.

The upcoming Local Landscapes exhibit, which runs from August 10 to 28, features the work of more than 40 local artists conveying images of beautiful Bowen Island and British Columbia. It presents art created using a wide variety of media from oil, charcoal and pencil, to silk screening and photography.

As a special summer delight, the Artists' Reception will be held on Friday evening, August 12, from 7 to 9:30 pm.

The social event coincides with the late opening of all the galleries and studios in Artisan Square including Shamon, Coastal Patterns, Cloudflower Clayworks, Arts Pacific, Joshua Van Dyke Studio and the Rob Wall Gallery as well as the 2011 BC Cultural Crawl.

Come up to the square for great art, refreshments, and live entertainment by Bowen newcomer Laurie Beesting. It's the perfect summer escape.
