The Garden Club invites Islanders to the final Open Garden of 2016 at the home of Geri Stimson at 342 Creek Rd. on Sunday, Sept. 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. There is a small charge for non-members but for a little extra you can buy a year’s membership on site.
The property enjoys a splendid position on a rocky, sunny bluff looking south and east. Access is via a particularly steep drive hence a shuttle will be provided for those who would prefer not to exhaust themselves on the steep ascent. Parking on Eagle Cliff Road and Creek Road is generous. Many long-term Islanders will remember the house and garden in the days of its former owners, Denys and Gillian Meakin. It did appear in at least one People, Plants and Places tour.
Geri bought the property this spring after a year of neglect during which Denys put his life together after the death of Gillian. She has been delighted with the roses, shrubs and perennials which have continued to make an appearance throughout the year. Watering has been a problem despite the fact that there is some water storage on the property. Many of us will remember Denys’ green house for the scores of tomato plants which made their way to the Plant Sale. Geri is delighted to find this wonderful resource in her new garden and hopes to make full use of it over the net year. She particularly wants to meet the gardening community and learn more about the unique challenges faced by life on ‘the rock.
