BIFWC volunteers and DFO released the last of the year's salmon fry in late June 2021

Malcolm Wigham (on the truck), Department of Fisheries and Oceans Salmon Enhancement Program community advisor, hands buckets of coho salmon fry to Bowen Island Fish & Wildlife Club volunteers Bruce Greyell and Barry Pynn a couple of weeks ago. They are pictured near the Horse Bridge in Crippen Park and this batch of coho were released into Terminal Creek.

In total, 8,100 coho were released into four salmon-bearing creeks on Bowen Island: Terminal Creek, Killarney Creek, Grafton Creek, and Explosives Creek. Earlier this year, 100,000 chum fry were released into the Lagoon and Davies Creek. Pink, chum, and coho salmon are raised by BIFWC volunteers under DFO supervision every year at the Terminal Creek Salmon Hatchery located in Crippen Park and owned by Metro Vancouver Parks.

This year’s salmon releases followed COVID-19 safety protocols which limited the number of participants. We are looking forward to a return to ‘normal’ next year with more volunteer participation, school and community tours, and reintroducing the BICS ‘Salmon in the Classroom’ program.
