On Saturday, October 27, Mark Singleton will share his view on yoga with Bowen Islanders at a library literary event held at the Gallery at Artisan Square from 7 to 9 p.m.

Singleton is a yoga teacher and scholar and his latest book Yoga Body has received critical acclaim as bringing fresh insight into the long history of yoga.

His talk on Bowen Island, entitled Are Yoga Poses Ancient History? is geared to yoga students as well as the general public and Singleton said, "It will be suitable for everyone. I'll start from the beginning and make it accessible to all."

Asked what we can learn about yoga through a lecture, Singleton replied, "The question implies that we know what 'it' is. Yoga as it is popularly practiced has changed incredibly over the past 150 years. Often what we do in the name of yoga today bears little resemblance to more traditional practices. Historical study of the development of yoga, and its recent past, can tell us a lot about what it is that we practice. In turn, this can help show us other possibilities for practice. It seems to me that the "West" has received a very thin slice of the yoga pie."

On the topic how Singleton's knowledge has influenced his practice and teaching, he says, "In brief, it has made me very curious about the parts of yoga that have been dropped from today's dominant practices, and has pushed me to explore traditions of yoga that go in very different directions."
