On October 22, nine teams of brave Bowen souls are spelling their hearts out in support of the Cove Commons Project (formerly Annex/Gallery)! All are welcome to Cates Hill Chapel at 7:30 pm to watch the fun which starts at 8:00 pm. Admission is just $10 with all proceeds going to support the Cove Commons Project in Snug Cove. Tickets are available at the Library and at the door.
The Bowen Island Public Library (BIPL) and the Bowen Island Arts Council (BIAC) are collaborating to construct a shared building in Snug Cove. This new building containing the Arts Council’s Gallery and the Library’s Annex, will create a hub of energy and activity in an enhanced gathering space at the entrance to Snug Cove. The new space will also spark economic opportunities and celebrate the artistic and intellectual life of Bowen Island. Thanks to the efforts of an amazing Fundraising Cabinet, and generous support from the community, the capital campaign, launched just one year ago, has been very successful. The Project Steering Committee is thrilled to announce they have reached 70% of the project budget of $950,000.
“Adult spelling bees are becoming very popular in communities across Canada,” states Tina Nielsen, Chief Librarian. “The competition will be lively, good-natured and entertaining. There are great prizes for the winning team and the team with the best theme and costumes.”
Refreshments, including beer & wine, will be on sale at the event.
The Spelling Bee is sure to be a memorable event, and hopefully the first of many to come. Intrepid Bowen Islanders will work together as a team and write their correct spelling on a whiteboard 20 seconds after hearing the word read. No standing alone at the front of the stage frozen in fear. That kind of bravery is just for kids! Come and cheer on your favourite team!
