Following up on our spring information session on Concussion, Bowen Island Caring Circle is offering a four-part series of educational workshops to provide strategies for people who have suffered a head injury. The goal of these sessions will be to provide tools for the symptoms and ongoing side effects that are most common in head injury, such as memory and attention problems as well as physical symptoms such as dizziness and fatigue. Many typical post-concussion symptoms can be minimized through deliberate lifestyle changes that allow time for the brain to heal and a gradual return to normal functioning. The Caring Circle has gathered a team of local practitioners who will lead these four monthly sessions. The workshops are intended for people who have had a head injury, as well as family members who would like to help a loved one through rehabilitation. Topics covered will be as follows with details about the first presenter outlined below. When we establish the dates for the speakers to follow, they will write a short paragraph outlining the topics they will specifically cover and perhaps respond to the needs of the attendees.
- Occupational Therapist Tamara Soloway: Setting a Manageable Pace to minimize the symptoms of concussion and post-concussion syndrome. Tamara says “Life is made up of meaningful everyday activities. After sustaining an illness or an injury, such as a head injury, a person’s ability to do these everyday things may change, and this can affect their quality of life and of those around them. This workshop will provide a practical introduction to maximizing the recovery process and living with a head injury through the use of a self-management approach that integrates head injury education, self-assessment, and the application of lifestyle modifications & compensatory strategies to everyday activities.”
- Physiotherapist Sandy Logan: Dizziness and Headaches: Visual Cortex Exercises to develop new neural pathways after concussion.
- Psychologist Caroline Nesbitt:Managing the frustrations of memory, attention and communication problems after concussion.
- Registered Nutritionist Ellie Mackay & Positively Fit Gym owner/trainer, Mary Letson: Nutrition and exercise after concussion.
Sessions will be held at the Caring Circle on Saturday mornings from 9:30-11:00. The first session will be on Sat. October 22nd, and the dates of subsequent sessions TBA. Please register through the Caring Circle at 604-947-9100, or email Colleen O’Neil at [email protected]
