Rotary turns its fundraising attention to Africa

The Rotary Club of Bowen Island will be fundraising for two African community development assistance programs during Bowfest. Both are closely linked to local Bowen residents.

The Rotary Club of Bowen Island will be fundraising for two African community development assistance programs during Bowfest. Both are closely linked to local Bowen residents.

The Rotary Run for Rwanda is being held to help support The Komera Project. It facilitates girls' secondary education in Rwanda by providing mentoring and financial support. Margaret, the daughter of Rob and Hilary Butler, has lived in Rwanda and was instrumental in founding the Komera Project.

Meanwhile, Sheila Webster's daughter Andrea lives in South Africa and is integrally involved the Kunavelela Project.

Rotarians will be offering a range of spring flowering bulbs for sale as a fundraising project to help both these worthwhile projects.

The Butlers, the Websters and other Rotarians will be on hand to provide further information about these projects throughout the day at Bowfest.

The Bowen Rotary Club has already raised over $20,000 for a variety of causes in 2011. They include the Bowen Safe Ride Home and night bus programs, Japanese Earthquake Relief, the BICS Outdoor Learning Centre and the Bowen Food Bank.

Since inception one year ago, the Bowen Island Rotary Club has grown to 28 members. The 2011-12 President is Eva Churcher. Meetings are held weekly on Thursdays, 7:30PM at the Snug Cafe and guests are welcome.
