Voracious young readers, get ready to time travel or head to space this summer vacation in the big tent outside the Bowen Island Public Library.

“The Summer Reading Club is a great way to maintain, or even improve reading skills over the summer,” said library supervisor Susan Geist. “The emphasis is on fun, and we work to encourage the enjoyment of books, and the reading of all varieties of material.”

There are different literary themes each week of the reading club, which starts next week, such as explore your own backyard, and wander into the past. Children can join in on weekly activities in the summer reading club tent at the library, or simply focus on recording their daily reading in the provided booklets.

At the end of each week, participants can bring their reading passport to the library to collect a sticker and enter the weekly prize draw. The reading club meets on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2 p.m. starting on July 5 for kids ages five to six.

The older kids, ages seven to nine, meet Wednesdays from 12:30 to 2 p.m. starting July 6. The summer reading club kicks off this Saturday, July 2 from noon to 2 p.m with food, entertainment and fun for all ages on the library lawn.
