One of the good things that come with summer on Bowen Island are the students who take on jobs at community organizations. Soon they’ll be back in to the student life, but in acknowledgment of all their hard work, here’s a bit about these seasonal workers:

From the Museum and Archives, Adèle Therias, UBC Geography student, has made strides in documenting the oral history of community members.

“My favourite part of the interviews was seeing peoples’ eyes sparkle as they recalled precious memories. I also loved guiding visitors through the exciting process of archival research,” she says.

Abby Pelaez, also at the Museum and Archives, studies Political Science at UBC. Pelaez says she has enjoyed organizing events, creating exhibits, giving tours, and writing newspaper articles and event reports.

Fiona Watson from Bowen Library is behind the kids’ programming in their “Book a Trip” tent. In UBC’s Master of Library and Information Studies program, Watson wants to work as a public librarian and is interested in children’s services, outreach, and First Nations library resources.

From Bowen Heritage, Lindsey Curtis, a Fine Arts student at Emily Carr, gives tours of the heritage cottages and works with other summer students to host events.

“I can see the reciprocal benefits of summer employment for university students in small communities and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to live and work here for the season,” she says.

Up on the hill, Tiffany Huang from the BIAC Gallery has found her job continue to inspire her love for the arts on a broader and deeper perspective. She currently studies Art History and Visual Arts at UBC and 2-D Design at Emily Carr Continuing Studies.

Other than helping with the day-to-day operation and event hosting of the gallery, she has been welcoming and informing the visitors about the exhibit, the artist(s) and general information about The Gallery and the arts on Bowen Island. She also designed and created artistically appealing promotional materials for gallery exhibits, performances and events.
