For the sheer joy of bluegrass: hear the High Bar Gang Friday

Colin Nairne, Barney Bentall, Wendy Bird, Kirby and Dave Barber, Rob Becker and Shari Ulrich play a night of old time bluegrass at Tir-na-nOg May 17.
The High Bar Gang

Bowen’s almost own (and maybe favourite) Bluegrass band, The High Bar Gang, is returning to Tir-na-nOg Theatre Friday, May 17.

We’re celebrating close to 10 years of playing old time bluegrass music for the sheer joy of it. Bandleader Colin Nairne, a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge of the genre, created the band to have a vehicle to play the music he loved. He assembled his favourite friends and collaborators, Bowen’s Barney Bentall, wife Wendy Bird, Kirby and Dave Barber, Rob Becker, me and as a special treat for this show, Tom Taylor.

The gorgeous four-part harmonies alone are worth the admission.  Doors open at 7 p.m., show is 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available at Phoenix and online at highbargang.brownpapertickets.com.

As Colin is famous for saying when planning rehearsals, “It will be fun. There will be snacks.” (Of course, in this case it means delicious cookies and treats baked by Jack and Julie!)

We look forward to seeing you on May 17.

Correction: in the print version of this story, the High Bar Gang was reffered to as the "High Barn Gang."
