BC Ferries has been seeing summer-like levels of weekend traffic on the Langdale run since the beginning of April, along with the overloads that come with it.

Sunday night, Ferries had to order an extra sailing after the final scheduled departure from Langale at 8:55 p.m. left more than 100 vehicles in the lot.

The sailing, which left just after midnight, had a load of 115 standard vehicles, three overheights, and 230 passengers, BC Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall said Monday.

Marshall said it’s fairly typical to see traffic start to get busy on Route 3 in April and May. BC Ferries is still calculating the numbers, but according to Marshall, “We have seen some overloads on Sundays at Langdale in April and May.”

Marshall said one thing is different than last year – although they’re seeing heavy traffic and occasional overloads, the sailings aren’t running late as often as last year.

“For the month of April 2018, on-time performance was 83.9 per cent on Route 3,” Marshall said in an email to Coast Reporter. “For April 2017, the on-time performance was 69.9 per cent. We are pleased to see an improvement in this area, as we know how important it is to our customers.”

BC Ferries will be adding more sailings starting May 17, and the summer schedule begins June 23.
