Diana Izdebski's salmon design won 44 per cent of online voters, making it the winning crosswalk design for Bowen Island.

Bowen Island Municipality is thrilled to congratulate Diana Izdebski, winner of the “Crosswalks, Bowen-Style” competition.

Diana is the designer of Bowen Island’s first-ever custom crosswalk with her salmon design. The winning design was decided in an online voting contest that resulted in 953 total votes from the community.

The new custom crosswalk will be painted following the completion of the Snug Cove Paving project.

“The salmon crosswalk art will be a great addition to Snug Cove,” said Bowen Island’s Mayor Murray Skeels. “It’s only appropriate that the Happy Isle should have whimsical crosswalks. They are a way to showcase our artists and our Island personality. The new paving is an excellent palette. It should all work out quite nicely.”

The idea for the competition came out of a collaborative effort between BIM Council and Staff and the Bowen Island Arts Council (BIAC). The competition was open to all Bowen Islanders and resulted in 27 submissions. A committee met to narrow down the contenders based on criteria that included creativity/originality, reflective of Bowen, replicability, suitability for production in white only and ease of maintenance in addition to meeting the requirements of the Request for Proposals.

At the close of voting, the breakdown of the votes was salmon 44 per cent, slugs 38 per cent and trees 18 per cent. The winner will be awarded $2,500 and must provide stencils that will be used to paint and maintain the crosswalk over time. The crosswalk is expected to be painted at the end of September once the paving has been completed.
