BIM reduces property tax late penalty again this year

Property taxes paid after July 2 but before August 31 will see a two per cent penalty.

Like last year, BIM is reducing the property tax late penalty to two per cent.

With property tax season around the corner Bowen Island Municipality is giving Boweners a break with fines.

Given the ongoing pandemic, BIM reduced the late penalty from five to two per cent for taxes paid after July 2 but before Aug. 31. A further eight per cent penalty is applied after Aug. 31. This is the same reduction given last year (there was a sunset clause built into last year's bylaw) and applies to all tax classes.

Council passed the resolution unanimously at its April 26 council meeting.

While few islanders were late paying their taxes last year (91 per cent of taxes levied were paid by July 2 according to BIM's CFO) Coun. Maureen Nicholson noted at the meeting that a year in, it may be a different story.

Property taxe notices are to be mailed out in mid-late May.
