BIRD under new management

Bowen Islanders may have noticed a few changes at their friendly neighbourhood recycling depot in the past couple of weeks.

Bowen Islanders may have noticed a few changes at their friendly neighbourhood recycling depot in the past couple of weeks. For one, the rotating cast of volunteers offering guidance about the proper disposal of various grades of plastics, have been replaced by a full-time employee of Bowen Waste Services, Ginger Erskine.

On January 1st, 2014, the Bowen Island Recycling Depot Society transferred the responsibility for the recycling depot over to the Municipality. The Municipality, in-turn, contracted the job out to Bowen Waste Services, headed up by Dave and Louise McIntosh.

Dave McIntosh says that people who come to BIRD to do their recycling can expect business as usual, but is happy to report the facility has new lights, and will be acquiring a 1000lb baler to make compact blocks out of cardboard, tin cans and plastics. "This will substantially reduce the number of trips we make off-Island," says McIntosh.
