National Waste Reduction Week is October 21 to 26. Everyone in Canada is encouraged to be aware of how they manage their waste.

We, on Bowen, can be proud of what we have accomplished in reducing our waste. We have for years had excellent recycling habits, and we participate in re-use practices through our Knick Knack Nook store. This keeps large volumes of many materials out of the land fill.

Not many of us are aware of how effective our separation of food scraps from the garbage stream has been. It is huge! The following graph shows how, since June 2012 when we started, the amount of garbage has dropped way off, and organics has continued to climb.

The effect of all these practices is that we are reducing our carbon footprint, and will reduce our waste management costs too.

And we can continue to do better as we think about how we can actually not make as much waste by shopping consciously.
