Famous and photogenic islanders grace pages of library calendar

Bowen Library has produced a 2014 calendar featuring 13 photos of "famous" Bowen Islanders reading. The idea was inspired by the American Library Association's READ posters featuring celebrities and sports heroes reading.

Bowen Library has produced a 2014 calendar featuring 13 photos of "famous" Bowen Islanders reading. The idea was inspired by the American Library Association's READ posters featuring celebrities and sports heroes reading. Our own Bowen celebrities are just as photogenic and are reading role models for the library and our community.

The calendar is a public awareness project, a celebration of our diverse community and also a fundraiser for the Bowen Library. Our little library is proud to be housed in the beautiful heritage building at the entrance to Bowen Island, but now for the fourth time in our history we have run out of space. In order to provide library programming, author visits, meeting space and quiet study space at the library we need more room.

The Annie Wood Annex named for the first Bowen library namesake will be a 1,000 square foot modular addition to the back of the library. It will be a multi-purpose space where students can study and collaborate, home based business owners can meet or work, the library can expand its programs and where events, workshops, and meetings can be held.

The annex will be a modular unit so that the installation can happen quickly and the annex can be re-used, moved or sold in the future should a new library facility be built or be located elsewhere. The Bowen Reads 2014 calendar is the start of our fundraising campaign to build the Annie Wood Annex.

The calendar was created by a team of library board volunteers and the Chief Librarian. Len Gilday took the photos, Donaleen Saul wrote the calendar text and much of the promotional pieces, Tim Rhodes did the design and layout and Tina Nielsen was the production coordinator.

The calendar is $20 and is for sale at the Library, Phoenix on Bowen, Cates Pharmacy, Bowen Building Centre, Bowen Island Roasting Company, The Office in Artisan Square, and may also be at the General Store soon. You will also find us at the BICS Christmas Craft Fair selling calendars and talking about the Annex. All profits from the sale of the calendars will go to the Annie Wood Annex fund. Anyone wishing to donate further can donate online to the Annex fund on the library's website under the Support Us tab http://www.bowenlibrary.ca/aboutus/fundraising.php or by contacting Tina Nielsen at 604-947-9788.
