Fire restrictions in place just in time for long weekend

Up to $100,000 fine plus firefighting costs if you cause a wildfire

Don’t let any campfires go burning out of control, or the BC Wildfire Service will start burning you — with fines.

Category 2 fires are banned in the Coastal Fire region — which includes Bowen Island — as of May 18 and will the prohibition will remain in effect until Oct. 20.

These types of fires include burning material that is two metres in height and three metres in width. Campfires are still allowed.

The ban also includes fires that:

— burn material concurrently in two piles each not exceeding 2 metres in height and 3 metres in width;

— burns stubble or grass over an area that does not exceed 0.2 hectares (less than 2,000 square metres.)

— are not campfires.

If you start a blaze that turns into a wildfire, penalties can result in fines up to $100,000 plus firefighting costs.

In the meantime, Bowen Island Municipality has moved the fire danger to moderate. Please carry out any forest activities with caution.
