Here’s your May 1 Squamish weather forecast & today's readers' photos

Highs of 14 C, moderate UV index recommendations, and high tide times. Learn the significance of May Day and its labour roots.

Welcome to May!

Happy May Day, if you celebrate it.

While Labour Day is officially in September in Canada, many workers here and worldwide mark May 1 as International Workers' Day, or their Labour Day.

According to Environment Canada, today (May 1) will see a mix of sun and clouds, with a 30% chance of showers this afternoon.

We will see a high of 14 C today, and a low down to 3 C overnight.

Sunset is at 8:32 p.m.

The UV index today is 4, or moderate. The higher the number, the stronger the sun's damaging rays and the more people need to consider protection. The scale ranges from 0 to 11+.

Moderate means "take precaution by covering up, and wearing a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, especially if you will be outside for 30 minutes or more."

History of UV Index

Did you know the UV Index is a Canadian creation?

It is!

Scientists at Environment and Climate Change Canada created it in 1992 to help protect people in Canada from the damaging effects of the sun.

The World Health Organization (WHO) adopted it as an international program in 1994.

The Government of Canada site says "a global standard, based on the Canadian model, was developed in 2002 and is now used around the world."

"Since UV values in more southerly countries can be much higher than those in Canada, the WHO and its partners decided to make the scale open-ended so that it could rise to over 10. UV index values of up to 14 can be found in tropical countries."
