Port Coquitlam seniors living at Astoria Residences raised more than $2,300 for cancer research during its own version of the Terry Fox Run.

While some of these residents may not be able to run any more, they remain ignited by the passion of Port Coquitlam's hometown hero to help others.

Last Sunday (Sept. 18), while thousands ran and jogged in the Terry Fox Run from Hyde Creek Recreation Centre, dozens of seniors walked, strolled and wheeled in their own version of the annual event.

Altogether, more than $2,300 was raised from 12th Silver Fox Walk — a joint organizational effort by the Astoria, Mayfair and Shaughnessy retirement residences (2245 Kelly Ave.).

The money is earmarked for the Terry Fox Foundation to further support cancer research.

In a release, spokesperson Jim Peacock explained nearly $17,000 has been collected since the first Silver Fox Walk, when Astoria first opened in Port Coquitlam.

Linnea Foster, Astoria recreation manager, added "the seniors recognize Terry Fox as their hometown hero and they have been very supportive each year since the first becoming involved soon after the residence opened in 2010."

Residents walked around the immediate permieter of the buildings, Peacock said.

In Port Coquitlam, more than $66,000 was accumulated for cancer research this year, according to the Terry Fox Foundation.
