School's back on Bowen - so watch out for little ones on the road

Labour Day has come and gone and now it's time for students to hit the books, which means watching for youngsters as they head to and from school.

As children don their back-to-school shoes, swing on their backpacks and head out for another year of tutelage, Bowen RCMP is reminding motorists to obey the rules of the road.

Cpl. Paulo Arreaga of Bowen RCMP notes in particular that motorists should be aware of:

  • School zones (marked or unmarked.) There are three on-island: Bowen Island Community School on Mt. Gardner Rd. and Grafton Rd; Island Pacific School on Carter Road and Island Discovery Learning Centre on Cowan Point Dr.
  • Students walking to and from school on the Bowen’s narrow, curved roads.
  • The school bus. Always be prepared to stop for the bus as passing while its stop lights are out to drop off students is not only unsafe, but illegal
  • Come to a complete stop at stop signs.
  • For parents of BICS students: there’s been an entrance change at the school parking lot.
  • For students: wear reflectors on your backpacks and clothing as the days get shorter.

“The RCMP will be re-focussing on speed violators around these areas starting the month of September,” says Arreaga.
