Delta Police have arrested a male youth in relation to a suspected arson to the playground at Chalmers Park in North Delta.

In a news release, issued Tuesday afternoon, police say the youth was arrested by officers on March 18.

Police are not providing an age of the suspect, nor will be releasing the youth's name as they can't under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

On March 5, DPD responded to a report of a fire at the playground area of Chalmers Park located at 11400 76A Avenue in North Delta early Saturday morning. The damage to the playground is estimated to be approximately $100,000.

Upon police arrival Delta Fire Department had already extinguished the fire. DPD are investigating this as an arson.

At the March 7th Delta council meeting, city manager Sean McGill told council that replacement of the playground by the City of Delta is a priority.

In a follow-up with the City of Delta, director parks, recreation and culture Carmen Gonzalez told the Optimist that staff will be issuing the competitive process to replace the playground soon and will have a better indication of the timeline for installation once that process is concluded.
