Seventy-two golfers between the ages of 8 and 14 descended upon Bowen Island Golf Club this week to compete in the BC Bantam and Novice Golf Championships.

Eleven of those young players come from the North Shore. Bruce Russell, with the Bowen Island Golf Club, says there is usually at least one Bowen player in this tournament but not this year.

“It’s a bit of a logistical challenge to have this tournament on an island, but it is a beautiful course,” says Greg Moody, the tournament director. “It’s a testament to this course.”

Colin Lavers, the coach at the National Junior Golf Development Centre at Seymore Golf and Country Club says it is a great course for the young golfers to experience.

“They’re going to get beat up a bit today,” he said on the first day of the tournament. “There’s lots of bounce out there. Kids are naturally aggressive so that bounce won’t always work in their favour. I would expect the scores to be better tomorrow.”
