Young Bowen Sailors triumph at Commodore’s Cup regatta

The pair sailed to victory against competition from across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland

Liam McNolty (14) and Henry Sinclair (12) representing Bowen Island Yacht Club took first place in the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club (RVYC)’s annual Commodore’s Cup sailing regatta from August 30 to September 1, 2022 in the RS Feva class.

The RS Feva is the most popular class with 19 boats competing. Teams from sailing clubs all across the Lower Mainland took part, including RVYC, West Vancouver YC, Hollyburn Sailing Club, and Surrey Sailing Club.

Both sailors are graduates of Bowen Island Yacht Club’s Learn to Sail program held at Tunstall Bay. They both passed CanSail Level 4 (advanced sailing) this summer.

Liam helmed and Henry crewed for five races and they changed places with Henry taking the helm for two races.

The pair were presented with a Commodore’s Cup trophy by RVYC Commodore Brian Angus at an evening banquet with sailors and parents present at the RVYC clubhouse at the end of the last day of competition.

The BIYC coaches were Mait Davis, Miranda Berry and Ryan Champoux.

Henry has completed all stages of CanSail from Wet Feet to CanSail 4 at BIYC and first competed in the Commodore’s Cup in 2018 aged 8 in the Optimist course.

The Commodore’s Cup was inaugurated in 1985 by RVYC Commodore Patrick Oswald.
