Bowen Island Recycling depot is reopening Friday

However, new limitations are in place, including no electronics or refundables at this time

Have you missed the sound of your (clean and sorted) plastics compacting? The clang of tin can against tin can and the wash of relief that your recycling bin is no longer overflowing?

Fear no more, Bowen Island Recycling Depot (BIRD) will reopen April 3, said a press release from Bowen Waste Solutions and the municipality Thursday.

BIRD has been closed since mid-March due to COVID concerns.

“Careful consideration has been taken to comply with health and safety requirements for our staff and the community,” reads the press release.

The hours will be Thursday through Monday, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. but things are going to be a little different inside:

“Upon entry to BIRD, vehicles will be directed by staff to the parking area,” says the press release. “A maximum of two vehicles will have access to the building at one time, allowing for physical distancing requirements.”

Temporary limits and procedures include that:

  • All recyclables must be clean and pre-sorted
  • One person per vehicle can enter the building. Children and pets need to remain the vehicle.
  • Five-minute sorting time per vehicle
  • A maximum of four containers per vehicle

No electronics or refundables accepted at this time but there are some Vancouver bottle depots accepting these items, says the release.

The BIRD website is to have new information and guidelines around garbage, organics and recycling and anyone wanting further information is to contact Bowen Waste Solutions at 604-947-2255 or [email protected].

“BWS would like to thank residents for their patience, cooperation and support while we navigate these challenging times,” says the press release.
