Trunk Road has reopened after a van hit a hydro pole at the Snug Cove Dock. The pole came down across the roadway entrance to the ferry berth.

The driver walked away from the incident and no one else was hurt.

The 12:35 and 1:10 ferries were cancelled though some foot passengers were allowed to return on the ferry that brought over BC Hydro. A BC Ferries press release said service would resume as of the 3:45 sailing from Horseshoe Bay.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown, said Bowen Fire Chief Aaron Hanen.

Several witnesses saw the vehicle coming quickly down Trunk Road toward the dock.

“I heard him and he was driving really fast,” said Michael Epp. “My first thought was wow, someone’s really desperate to get on the ferry [but there was no ferry].”

“He went whipping past,” said Epp. “And then I heard the impressively loud crash.”
