CHATHAM — Police say a young child has died after being struck by a train in Chatham, Ont., over the weekend.
Investigators say first responders were called around 1:10 a.m. Saturday for reports that a train had struck a pedestrian.
They say emergency crews found a critically injured child, who died at the scene.
Sgt. Jason Herder of the force's traffic management unit called the incident an "unimaginable tragedy" and says support services have been offered to the child's family as well as first responders.
Police say they will not identify the child in order to respect the family's privacy.
They say rail traffic in the area was temporarily stopped but has since resumed.
